Tithes
THE TITHE APPLOTMENTS
DEFINITION
- The Tithe Applotment books were compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings over one acre should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland (the main Protestant church and the church established by the State until its disestablishment in 1871).
- Tithes were not payable on all agricultural land and the qualification for taxable land appears to differ from County to County. In general grassland appears to be exempt but potato patches and various crops were taxable. Hence the tax didn’t correspond to the land valuation
- The Tithe’s tended to be payable by the poor and were resented by those who were not Church of Ireland
- The Tithe Applotments exempt those not occupying land and those who do not raise certain crops but they are the only surviving Nationwide survey of this period.
- The Tithe Applotments are not yet digitalised and the indexes are less than satisfactory e.g. some names have been indexed wrongly e.g. Bullen for Mullen etc, some do not appear in the Townland they are subscribed to.
- The List below is correct but no yet complete
- The location of the Parishes and Townlands can be found on the free website osi.ie
