Marriage Licence Bonds
- Marriage could take place by “bands” (read out in church 3 weeks prior to a wedding) or by a “Marriage Licence Bond”
- Marriage Licence Bonds were used only in the Church of Ireland. They were generally used by the more affluent and were frequently accompanied with a “Marriage Settlement”. A Marriage Settlement was a legal deed which set aside money for the bride, in the event of her husband dying.
- Marriage Licence Bonds were issued by the Dioceses, and as such, the records were not destroyed , hence provide knowledge of the year of marriage when the church registers have been destroyed.
- We are aware of the discrepancy with the dates of some Marriage Licence Bonds and the Church Registers. We are unable to explain this as both have come from the original source.
