An extensive system of robbery has been detected in Cork, where the clerk of Mr William Bullen, an attorney, has been forging his master’s name to bills of a large amount, discounted in the Branch Office of the Bank of Ireland. The last transaction was a bill for £20 which was accidentally known by Mr Bullen seeing the usual notice from the Bank. The clerk, whose name is Daniel Hanlon, was arrested immediately after its discovery on the South Mall.

DEATH OF DR. BULLEN, SEN.
The account of this lamented gentleman’s unexpected death which rapidly circulated through the city on yesterday, created but one feeling, that of general and sincere regret. Distinguished for his eminent skill as a physician, he was no less distinguished for his acquirements as a scholar and a gentleman. His gentle, bland, courteous manner endeared him to the large circle in which he professionally moved: while his amiable qualities in private life rendered him the beloved of his home circle. Truly a gentleman of the old school, Dr BULLEN has left few like him behind, though many to lament the loss which his death occasions to his own family, his profession, and the public.
THE FUNERAL OF THE LATE DR. BULLEN
The funeral of this much-lamented gentleman took place this morning at an early hour, the melancholy procession having moved from the South Mall a little after 9 o’clock. Long before the appointed hour the South Mall was crowded on either side by the private carriages of the principal gentry of the city and county, many gentlemen having, to our knowledge, come to Cork from a distance of 80 miles, to pay the last testimony of respect to one who had held for many years the highest rank in his profession, and whose character, as a good man and sincere Christian was fully equal to his eminence as a physician. One striking feature in the procession that accompanied this good citizen to the tomb, evidenced in the most honourable manner the reverence paid to him while he was living. That was the unanimous resolve of the medical faculty, to attend as a body, to provide themselves with the usual funeral emblems, and to precede the bier in regular procession. Such a mark of respect has not been paid to any individual of that profession by the body before. They declared their intention and came unsolicited, their number being nearly 100. Among the number were the medical men of Cork, Cove and other neighbouring towns. The clergy immediately followed, they being next to the bier. More than 200 mourners gentlemen of the highest rank in the city, succeeded, the procession being wound up by an immense train of private carriages.
The death of this good man was worthy of his life. For months past he was aware his hour was fixed, and he prepared for that awful event with all the serenity of the true Christian philosopher. His final instructions to the members to the members of his afflicted family were given as clearly and with as much tranquillity as if he were preparing a journey or regulating the ordinary business of this world. All this was not the cold stoicism of the unbeliever but the calm confidence of the devoted Christian. His last moments were edifying, beyond the power of expression having devotedly received the consolations of religion He has left an honourable name behind a legacy to his children more valuable than all the wealth or sleandour of this fleeting life. May he rest in peace. AMEN

MASONIC INTELLIGENCE—[COMMUNICATED.]
The Brethren of the Third Lodge of Ireland assembled for banquet on Wednesday evening, the 24th inst., at the Queen’s Hotel, Queenstown, to celebrate the festival of St. John. The front of the hotel was tastefully illuminated with appropriate devices in gas jets. Brother William M. Bullen, W.M., presided, assisted by Brothers Jas. Hackett and William D. Stephens as senior and junior wardens. The customary loyal and masonic toasts were all duly honoured, and the evening spent most agreeably and harmoniously, enlivened as it was by the excellent singing of some musical Brethren, under the direction of Brother Henry Baker. The Dublin band, whose services were secured for the occasion, played some beautiful opera music during the banquet.
Visitors were received from Lodges No. 1 and 557, who dined at the same hotel ; and complimentary telegrams were despatched to the Lodges at Cork and responded to.
The dinner, supplied by Brother Elliott, was replete with every delicacy of the season ; and the wines were of the choicest description.
While enjoying the good things provided for them the assembly were not unmindful of the orphans of their deceased brethren. At the suggestion of a brother present a subscription was entered into for the Cork Masonic Orphan Asylum, and the amount collected handed to the Treasurer, who was a visitor to the Lodge.
After enjoying a most delightful treat the company left for Cork at half-past 11 o’clock by a special train, provided for the occasion by Wm. Parsons, Esq., the courteous manager of the Queenstown Direct Railway.

Sergeant Bullen, who has been in charge of the Poverty Bay police district for the past eight or nine years, has resigned. He is the brother of Inspector Bullen, formerly of Napier, and was in charge at Waipawa from 1879 to 1881, when he was transferred to Poverty Bay. The Sergeant has been a very popular officer, and the news of his resignation has been received throughout the district with surprise and regret. He retires on compensation, which is a month’s pay for each year’s service in the force. His successor is Sergeant Carlyon from Woodville.

1895 Cork Examiner
Death of Dr Bullen, Tauranga, East Coast New Zealand
Yesterday morning, quite unexpectedly, Dr Francis Bullen passed away at Tourist Villa, where he had been staying for a considerable period. He had been ailing slightly for some time past, but not sufficiently to prevent him attending his duties. Yesterday morning he was about the house as usual, and about 7 O’Clock Mr Baker found him sitting at the foot of the verandah steps, and at the doctors own request helped him up and to his bedroom, where he sat down on the bed and died almost immediately without a struggle, death being apparently due to weakness of the heart. The deceased was 58 years of age and a native of Cork, Ireland, where his father and grandfather held prominent rank in their day as Physicians and surgeons: He for several years held appointments in the British India Company’s steamers, and later practiced in various towns in Australia, coming to New Zealand a few years ago and to Tauranga in 1889. During his sojourn here he has always proved himself a friend to the poor, attending them without fee or reward, and many will have a kind word to say for him now he is gone. Died May 2nd 1895 aged 58 years- New Zealand Paper
